Recently appointed Director’s passion for brewing promises to elevate program.
Lourdes University is welcoming a new face to its faculty, and he’s ready to brew up some excitement in the Craft Beverage program. Dr. Chris Paumi, the recently appointed Assistant Professor and Director of Craft Beverage, brings a wealth of experience and a passion for brewing that promises to elevate the program to new heights.
A Journey through Education and Research
Dr. Paumi’s journey in the world of academia began with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and chemistry from Gettysburg College in 1998. Building on this foundation, he pursued a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology, specializing in toxicology and cancer biology, at Wake Forest University, from which he graduated in 2003. His postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University focused on yeast cell biology and concluded in 2008.
Venturing into the professional realm, Dr. Paumi served as an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky in the toxicology and cancer biology department from 2008 to 2015. His expertise centered around leukemia and lymphoma research. He later became an assistant professor in the chemistry department, teaching pre-health courses and brewing science.
Dr. Paumi’s journey into the world of brewing was sparked in 1999 when his wife gifted him a brewing kit. From that point forward, he found himself captivated by the art and science of crafting beverages, a passion that has only intensified over the years. In 2018, Dr. Paumi opened Fusion Brewing, a venture that eventually closed its doors in August 2022 due to the challenges posed by COVID-19.
That same year, Dr. Paumi took on the role of brewing supervisor at Samuel Adams under The Boston Beer Company umbrella (also known for brands like Angry Orchard, Twisted Tea, and Truly). His responsibilities included supervising and organizing entire shifts during his 13-hour workdays. However, by late 2023, Dr. Paumi decided to embark on a new chapter in his career, leading him to Lourdes University.
Bringing Expertise to Lourdes
Choosing Lourdes University was a purposeful move for Dr. Paumi. Wanting to be closer to family, including his twin daughters who decided to pursue college in Ohio, he saw this opportunity as a chance to impact the Craft Beverage program positively. Excited about the prospect of infusing his creativity and ideas into a relatively young program, Dr. Paumi envisions a future where he can nurture and develop the program to its fullest potential.
Dr. Paumi’s goals extend beyond the classroom. He is eager to collaborate with the community, fostering relationships and raising awareness about the Craft Beverage program. Recognizing the importance of preserving the program’s valuable traditions, he is equally committed to injecting his own originality.
A Vision for the Future
Dr. Paumi’s diverse background has given him a unique perspective on the versatility of a degree or minor in Craft Beverage. He envisions the program as a dynamic force, serving individuals in various ways throughout their lives.
As he settles into his role at Lourdes University, Dr. Chris Paumi is not just brewing beverages; he’s brewing success, community engagement, and a future filled with endless possibilities for the Craft Beverage program. Students and enthusiasts alike can look forward to a program that combines tradition with innovation under the expert guidance of a passionate and experienced director.
