Pre-Dentistry (BS in Biology With Concentration)

Bachelor of Science

A Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a Pre-Dental concentration is the perfect path for an undergraduate student looking to gain entrance into dental school.

Dentists offer professional advice and instruction to their patients concerning how best to care for their teeth and gums, including diet choices that can affect oral health. In addition, dentists also diagnose and treat problems. Their communication, dexterity, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills assist them in the workplace.

Whether as a member of a larger organization or in private practice, dentists enjoy successful careers as general practitioners, dental public health specialists, endodontists, oral and maxillofacial radiologists or surgeons, oral pathologists, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, periodontists, or prosthodontists.

Students are encouraged to take the Dental Acceptance Test (DAT) before applying to dental school during their junior year. Upon graduation from an accredited dental school, individuals must pass prescribed written and practical exams to become licensed to practice in any given state.

Plan of Study

Total credit hours: 122

REQUIRED CURRICULUM

Please see required B.S. in Biology curriculum. Students are encouraged to select the Health Sciences concentration.

Health Sciences Concentration
This concentration is recommended for students pursuing graduate training in most health professions.

BIO 114 Medical Terminology
BIO 313 Nutrition Science
BIO 330 Anatomy & Physiology I
BIL 330  Anatomy & Physiology I Lab
BIO 331 Anatomy & Physiology II
BIL 331  Anatomy & Physiology II Lab
BIO 340 Pathophysiology
BIO 403 Immunology
(Approved Electives)

Note: Students interested in medicine, physician assistant, dentistry and pharmacy are also encouraged to complete a Chemistry Minor. This minor contributes to a student’s ability to succeed on the entrance exams for professional school and strengthens his/her transcript. The Chemistry Minor can be achieved by taking the following Chemistry courses:

CHM 305 Basic Biochemistry

Early Acceptance Program

Lourdes biology majors can apply for the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) Early Acceptance Program (EAP) in three graduate tracks: Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy.
The LECOM College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy and School of Dental Medicine offer an EAP that allows qualified Lourdes students to hold a provisional reserved seat at one of LECOM’s professional schools upon successful completion of an interview. Students can then pursue successful completion of their required undergraduate coursework at Lourdes University.

Rooted in Franciscan Values.

Lourdes Franciscan-inspired education prepares students for a lifetime of professional and personal success.
