About Information Technology Services

MISSION STATEMENT

The department of Information Technology Services will advance the mission of Lourdes University by providing a seamless technology infrastructure and services that support an environment dedicated to learning, reverence, and service.

AREAS OF OPERATION

ADMINISTRATION, GOVERNANCE, AND STRATEGIC PLANNING

Led by the Chief Information Officer, administration and governance is a crucial role in the ITS department. This includes managing personnel issues, administering contracts and agreements, creating policy and procedures, and aligning the resources of the ITS department in order to support the mission and strategic plan of the University.

ACADEMIC SYSTEMS AND SERVICES

Academics and the pursuit of knowledge through research are the lifeblood of all universities. Lourdes is no different in its mission to educate the students of the University. Through the seamless integration of technology into the classroom and the accessibility of information and resources, ITS will work to ensure that technology is never an impediment to the teaching and learning processes of Lourdes.

ADMINISTRATIVE TECHNOLOGY SERVICES

The staff and administration of Lourdes provide critical administrative and support that assists faculty and students in the teaching and learning process. To that effect, ITS will provide technology and services that automate and streamline non-academic processes as much as possible. In this effort, ITS will maintain a robust package of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) tools in a high-availability and secure environment that will be utilized by crucial support areas such as finance, HR, student accounts, admissions, advising, and many others.

INFORMATION SECURITY

Ensuring the safety and security of the various types of data housed by Lourdes is a top priority for the ITS department. Lourdes ITS also works to ensure that the University’s IT resources are compliant with the various regulatory requirements as well as federal, state, and local requirements. If you suspect that any data or sensitive resources of the university may be at risk, please contact Lourdes Information Technology Services team at helpdesk@lourdes.edu. For more information on security awareness, please visit the CyberAware section of this page.

IT INFRASTRUCTURE

The network (both wired and wireless) as well as the servers, email and telecommunications systems, and identity management are the lifeblood of the IT organization. ITS strive to provide the most stable, flexible, and secure environment possible that provides unfettered access to information and resources for all members of the Lourdes community.

USER SUPPORT

Unfortunately, sometimes things break or don’t work as we expect them to. When this happens the ITS is able to provide user support both through our Help Desk and through desk-side support services. ITS can provide assistance with hardware and software problems, problems with the ERP or academic technology, classroom technology, and the procurement, setup, and installation of computers across campus.

CyberAware

WHAT IS CYBERAWARE?

CyberAware is the educational part of Lourdes University’s program to protect the private data entrusted to us. At Lourdes, cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. We take the safety of the private information of our students, faculty, and staff very seriously and are committed to earning the trust you place in us by safeguarding your most valuable resource – your identity.

ARE UNIVERSITIES REALLY A TARGET FOR CYBER ATTACKS?

Yes! Universities are considered a goldmine for cyber-criminals looking for troves of personal data.  Because of the types of data that universities house – personally identifiable information, financial information, health data, research data, and much more, they are considered highly coveted targets for cyber attacks. A February 2017 ComputerWorld article details how one Russian hacker has been able to breach 63 U.S. and U.K. universities and government organizations since late 2016. Further, according to a recent Gemalto study, cyber attacks against universities increased by 103% from 2016 to 2017. This is why protecting our information is of the utmost importance and why understanding how Lourdes, and you as an employee or student of the university, are prime targets for cyber attacks.

Additionally, major companies across the globe have been breached in recent months. These companies have entire teams of information security professionals and spend millions of dollars each year on cybersecurity technologies. Here are some resources related to some of the biggest hacks and data breaches in recent history:

WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED WITH CYBERSECURITY?

The very existence of Lourdes depends on our students continuing to trust us with our ability to provide a solid education and professional services. Regulatory penalties, fines, and law suits divert scarce monetary resources away from our primary mission of educating students. Aside from the regulatory fines and penalties that can amount to millions of dollars, a data breach can potentially impact our ability to attract new students, may threaten our ability to offer federal financial aid to our students, and could jeopardize our ability to receive funding and/or data for research projects across campus. In fact, EAB, a leading higher education research consortium, recently conducted a study which concluded that the average data breach for a university in the U.S. costs the institution approximately $245 per record. This does not include any regulatory penalties that may be incurred as well.

AREN’T HACKERS JUST TRYING TO BREAK INTO OUR SERVERS AND DATABASES?

No. The ultimate goal of any cyber-criminal is to gain access to the personal, financial, or health-related data stored in various electronic systems. Although there are sophisticated attack methods that people employ to break into these systems, the simplest and safest vector of attack is the people of the organization. A compromised set of login credentials can potentially yield access to a vast amount of protected information that is highly sought after by various criminal enterprises. Also, once a set of credentials is compromised, it is possible for cyber-criminals to go about their business undetected and unnoticed for some time. The right piece of malware on a computer can potentially capture all the machine’s activity, every keystroke made, and even send files stored on the computer to remote locations – all without your knowledge. Finally, what would you do if suddenly every file on your computer became completely inaccessible and encrypted so that it could not be opened? What would you pay to gain access to all of your files and documents? That can and does happen to victims of a ransomware attack.

If you are a person who handles any protected information – financial, medical, or personally identifiable – imagine what a cyber-criminal could do with your Lourdes login credentials or access to your Lourdes computer and/or administrative systems.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PROTECT MYSELF AND OUR DATA?

Become more aware of what the different types of cyberattacks look like and how to spot them. There are several different types of cyberattacks that are launched against the people of an organization. These include – phishing, ransomware, spearphishing, business email compromise, whaling, and more. CSO, an online resource that “provides news, analysis and research on security and risk management” published a concise description of the different types of phishing attacks.

There is a general cyber security awareness training that is required for all employees of Lourdes as well as many other learning opportunities available (some may be required based on your position, and others are optional).

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SUSPECT I AM THE TARGET OF PHISHING?

If you suspect an email may be phishing related, please forward the email in its entirety to helpdesk@lourdes.edu.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SUSPECT I AM THE TARGET OF ANOTHER FORM OF CYBER ATTACK OR THAT LOURDES PROTECTED INFORMATION MAY HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED?

If you notice anything that could signal that your user credentials, computer, laptop, mobile device, or storage device may have been compromised or suspect the potential compromise of any Lourdes information, notify the ITS department immediately via email at helpdesk@lourdes.edu. Please provide as much information as possible as to why you suspect that protected data may have been compromised.

Microsoft Office 365

WHAT IS OFFICE 365?

This service provides all students, faculty, and staff of the University access to email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, and several others products and services.  These can be accessed online and on your computer through Microsoft Outlook.  As a member of the Lourdes University community, your Office 365 subscription gets you access to up to five installations of Microsoft Office on personally-owned devices that are valid during the duration of your employment and/or student life at Lourdes University!

As part of the Office 365 offering, every faculty/staff member and student currently enrolled at Lourdes University is given an email account for use throughout the duration of their time at Lourdes. Faculty and staff email addresses are formatted as first initial + last name @lourdes.edu (i.e. jdoe@lourdes.edu). Student email addresses are formatted as first name.last name@mymail.lourdes.edu (i.e. john.doe@mymail.lourdes.edu).

USE OF THE OFFICE 365 ACCOUNT

Faculty, staff, and students are required to use their Lourdes University email accounts for official email communication with other members of the University. If a student uses another email account to submit an assignment, the student does so at her or his own risk. Should the document fail to arrive for whatever reason, the student is accountable for a missing assignment, subject to the terms of the individual instructor’s syllabus. Under no circumstances should faculty or staff transmit or receive FERPA-protected via any email account other than their Lourdes email account.

Student email accounts will be kept for two years after the student takes his/her last course. If a student returns to Lourdes after stopping out for two years, their email account will be recreated at that time. All users can access email via logging into the Lourdes Portal.

Wi-Fi Calling

HAVING ISSUES WITH CELL PHONE COVERAGE ON CAMPUS?

Cell phone coverage by various carriers may be spotty in some places on campus.  If you are having issues, we suggest turning on Wi-Fi calling.

WHAT IS WI-FI CALLING?

Instead of using your carrier’s network connection, users can make voice calls through a Wi-Fi network. That can include a Wi-Fi connection you have set up at home, or whatever Wi-Fi hotspot you happen to be on when you’re out and about, such as a cafe or library. In most ways, it’s like any other normal call, and you still use regular phone numbers.

WHY WOULD I WANT THAT?

Wi-Fi calling is especially useful when you’re in an area with weak carrier coverage. For example, when you’re traveling to the residential countryside, or you’re in a building with spotty reception. You may already be familiar with using Wi-Fi to send messages when SMS texting is unavailable (apps like Kik and Facebook Messenger provide these services) — and the same applies for when you’re trying to place a call.

WHAT CARRIERS AND PHONES SUPPORT THIS SERVICE?

Of the four major US carriers, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T provide built-in Wi-Fi calling.
