Students must show their valid student ID card to use the services provided in the Academic Success Center. The Academic Success Center reserves the right to refuse service to students without proper identification. Upon logging into the Center, students must notify the staff of their intended Academic Success Center use.

Lourdes alums may use the Academic Success Center’s desktop computers, but other services (e.g., tutoring, workshops, and laptops) are not permitted.

The Academic Success Center will revoke testing privileges for any student it discovers cheating on a test and notify the student’s instructor and administration.

JOAN RICH STRUCTURED LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SLA)

• Who Plans SLA Sessions?
  • Instructors are an active part of the process.
  • Collaboration and communication between the instructor(s), the SLA Coach, and the SLA Peer Coach are essential to the success of the SLA process.
  • Weekly meetings with SLA Coach ensure that these sessions are planned, coordinated, and relevant to the information presented in class.
  • The Peer SLA Coach will attend the majority of the lectures pertaining to the learning community.
• When Are SLA Sessions Typically Held?
  • Session times vary depending on the course. The greatest student participation has occurred when the sessions take place directly before or immediately after one of the class.
• Why Should a Student Attend SLA?
  • Data collected from previous semesters has shown that attending SLA improves academic performance.
  • To reinforce course content.
  • To develop peer friendship and study groups which are ongoing throughout their tenure at LU.
  • To focus on active learning skills, thus resulting in improved memory and recall.
  • To improve the student’s important organizational techniques
  • Attendees are asked to take the Visual, Auditory, Read and Write, Kinesthetic (VARK) Learning Styles Inventory.
  • SLA sessions provide activities that involve using each of the four learning styles
• What Study Tools Does a Student Develop in an SLA Session?
  • Activities vary weekly and by content area.
    • Create flashcards, topic grids, Cornell notes, mnemonics, and appropriate memory triggers.
    • Review relevant concepts from lecture, especially when an exam date is near.
    • Use learning software that relates to course content area which provides rehearsal for better memory storage and retrieval.
    • Provide practice quizzes and tests online.
    • Participate and create SMART Board activities.

The Academic Success Center is looking for both:

• Peer Tutors / Coaches – undergraduate students currently enrolled in college courses
• Professional Tutors / Coaches – teachers, professionals, and those who have earned degrees or are currently enrolled in graduate level courses

Job Summary ( Tutor / Academic Coach / SLA Coach ):

Tutors support students in almost all content matter (including math, sciences, business, writing/English, nursing, psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice, and study skills). Tutors help to clarify and/or reinforce course content, assignments and materials. Tutoring is a supplement to teaching, not a replacement for class attendance and participation. Tutors do not provide “answers” but rather assist in the learning process.

Academic Coaches help to integrate effective goal-setting, learning styles, study strategies, and life skills into the schedules of their assigned students. Coaches are knowledgeable in time management, organization, study skills, note taking, and other topics. Coaching provides academic support to students for developing their skills and confidence to become independent learners.

Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) Coaches provide organized group study practice in an active learning lab. SLA sessions are attached to historically difficult classes to support students’ overall academic success. SLA Coaches are trained to use different learning style techniques resulting in improved memory and recall of course content, and they prepare specific practice materials, worksheets, and other educational resources for each session.

General Skills: 

• Basic computer skills
• Organization skills
• Interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds
• Proven track record of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality
• Ability to maintain a friendly, cooperative, and student-oriented atmosphere

Essential Duties:

• Meet with students on a one-to-one or small-group basis to provide learning assistance.
• Complete and submit a tutoring report after each session.
• Work only with current Lourdes University students.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information.
• Maintain communication with ASC supervisory staff.
• Attend pre-semester mandatory training (in fall and spring).
• Foster academic integrity.
• Model appropriate academic attitudes and behaviors to staff, faculty, and students.
• Demonstrate dedicated work ethic, including coming to work when scheduled, arriving on time, actively participating in the job during the work shift, and timely notification of any schedule conflicts.
• Consistently stay up-to-date with new training procedures and policies.

In the ASC, Tutors/Coaches can set their availability to meet their own scheduling needs. We provide initial training, professional development opportunities, and ongoing support. You will never be without help or a resource if you ask!

All undergraduate Peer Tutors / Coaches are expected to achieve academically. The Director and Staff of the Academic Success Center support all undergraduate Peer Tutors / Coaches in keeping themselves accountable to their own academic responsibilities.

To become a Peer Tutor / Coach, you must:

• Earn an A- or better in the subject of the course to be tutored.
• Obtain instructor/advisor recommendation for each course/subject to be tutored.
• Complete a FAFSA for the current academic year.
• Provide your resume/CV.
• Fill out a Peer Tutor / Coach application here.

To become a Professional Tutor / Coach, you must:

• Have earned an A- or better and/or a degree in the subject of the course to be tutored.
• Provide a cover letter with your resume/CV.
• Provide copy of transcript(s) from undergraduate and graduate institution(s).

LAPTOP LENDING

Loan Policies:

• Only currently enrolled Lourdes University students can check out laptops. Faculty, staff, and alumni are ineligible. Students will need their student ID to check out a laptop.
• Laptops can be checked out from the Academic Success Center, Library, Flasck Nursing Center or the Center for Nursing Scholarship. Please return the laptop to the same place it was checked out.
• Laptops are on a first come, first serve basis.

Laptop kits include:

• the laptop and mouse/charger (if requested)
• Flash drives, software, discs, headphones, etc. cannot be provided.

Laptops need to remain on the main campus. Please do not take laptops to the residence halls.

Laptop lending is a program to provide additional computer availability to Lourdes students. Please do not sit at a computer workstation while using a laptop.

Loan Periods:

• Laptops may be checked out for daily use. No Overnight loans are permitted.
• Laptops must be returned no later than 1 hour before closing regardless of check out time.
• Laptops are not able to be checked out 1 hour before closing.

Returning Late or Damaged Laptops:

In the unlikely event a laptop is damaged during use, the borrower will be responsible for replacement parts costs. The Lourdes University IT Department will have the authority in determining this charge and students will be notified.

Laptops that are not returned on the day they are checked out will accrue a fine of $100.

If the laptop is not returned within 48 hours of check out time, the laptop will be considered lost or stolen and the borrower will be responsible for the cost of replacement.

Late fines may be paid by cash or personal check at the time of check in.

• If a fine is not paid at check in, a hold will be placed on the student’s account until the fine is paid.
• Students will not be permitted to borrow a laptop until fines are paid. (Please note: library borrowing privileges will be suspended until all fines are paid, including the use of OhioLINK).

Borrower Responsibilities:

Laptops should always be attended and returned promptly.

Work should be saved on a flash drive, email, or other space. Documents on the laptop are erased at each shut down.

Borrowers are expected to follow the Technology Acceptable Use Policies.

Lourdes University reserves the right to decline usage to any student at any time.

Current Lourdes students are able to register for a residual ACT test that will potentially enable students to improve their Math, Science, English, and Reading placement. Students are eligible to register for one, two, or all of the tests that are offered below.

Payment for the Residual ACT Test is non-refundable. Scores on this examination are only valid at Lourdes University. If you sign up to take a single section test (Math, English, etc.) be sure that it is the only ACT test you will need.  You are only able to take the Residual ACT once every 60 days even if you only took a portion of the test.

Limited spots are available for each of the test dates. Reservations are accepted on a first-come basis. Students will be notified of their registration once a date/time is finalized, the payment and form are received.
