SUMMARY:An Evening with Emily Nussbaum
DESCRIPTION:Who invented reality television\, the world’s most dangerous pop-culture genre? And why can’t we look away from shows like the Bachelor and Survivor? Award-winning\, New York Times best-selling author Emily Nussbaum will talk about her revelatory new book Cue the Sun! that explores the rise of the “dirty documentary\,” from its contentious roots in radio to the ascent of Donald Trump. Emily will share stories of the real characters who built the reality genre and explore the morally charged\, funny\, and sometimes tragic consequences of the hunt for something real inside something fake. \nEmily Nussbaum is a staff writer at The New Yorker\, where she’s worked since 2011\, originally as the magazine’s television critic. In 2016\, she won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism. Previously\, she was the culture editor for New York\, where she created the Approval Matrix. She is the author of I Like to Watch: Arguing My Way Through the TV Revolution\, which was a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband\, Clive Thompson\, and their two children. \nVIP Reception begins at 6pm and is a mix-and-mingle format\, with an opportunity to meet the author beforehand. A signed copy of the book and light refreshments are included with VIP tickets. \nA free\, signed copy of her new book will be given to the first 50 registrants. Additional copies will be available for purchase at the event. \nThe author’s presentation and Q & A will be followed by a book signing. \nRegister by Tuesday\, July 9 to https://form.jotform.com/jewishtoledo/jfgtprograms or Sherry Majewski at 419-724-0351 or sherry@jewishtoledo.org \nThis event is coordinated through a community partnership by Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo\, Lourdes University\, and Finch & Fern Book Co.
